SEC Absorbed With Porn During Economic Crisis Posted: 23 Apr 2010 12:16 PM PDT
As the Obama Administration pushes for more government regulation, a new report reveals that the agency charged with policing the nation's financial industry was preoccupied with pornography while the economy crumbled. The country's financial system collapsed while employees and high-ranking managers at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regularly spent work hours gawking at pornography web sites on their government computers, according to an agency inspector general probe obtained this week by a major news organization. Dozens of SEC employees, including senior officers with lucrative six-figure salaries, view explicit images on their agency computers during work hours. One senior attorney at the SEC headquarters in Washington D.C. spent up to eight hours a day accessing internet porn. When his government computer ran out of file space, he downloaded pornographic images on compact discs and stored them in boxes in his office. One agency accountant tried to access porn websites 16,000 times in one month and got busted with hundreds of pornographic images on her computer hard drive. Another SEC accountant used his government computer to upload his own sexually explicit videos onto various porn websites that he frequented during business hours. At least seventeen of the SEC offenders are senior-level employees earning taxpayer-financed salaries of up to $222,418. As deplorable as this behavior is for public servants, it's not limited to this agency. Last year employees at the National Science Foundation, the multi billion-dollar federal agency that promotes science and national health, were exposed for spending significant portions of their workdays watching, downloading and e-mailing pornography on their government computers. Additionally, a senior National Park Service official who oversaw one of the agency's most popular facilities, the Gettysburg National Military Park, for years used his office computer to view thousands of sexually explicit images. He was simply reassigned with no further consequences.

Town Threatened Over “Anti-Immigrant” English Only Law Posted: 23 Apr 2010 08:19 AM PDT In the latest move to protect illegal immigrants who speak only Spanish, a rural New York town will be sued by a taxpayer-subsidized civil rights group if it doesn't rescind a new law requiring that all official government business be conducted in English. The "misguided ordinance" is unconstitutional and a symptom of "anti-immigrant hostility that was swept the country in recent years," according to the famously liberal group (American Civil Liberties Union) threatening the legal action. It also discriminates against those with limited English skills and prohibits a vast array of constitutionally protected speech. More importantly, the new law violates a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits municipal governments from discriminating against non English-speaking people, according a threat delivered by the ACLU to Jackson New York officials this week. The group asserts that the new rule will exclude non English speakers from accessing vital services such as government-funded health services or police protection. The town is located east of Saratoga Springs and has about 2,000 residents. Last month the Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 to pass the English only law, which the ACLU claims is not enforceable and unconstitutional at both the state and federal level. If it is not immediately rescinded, the Justice Department will be contacted about the Civil Rights Act violations, the ACLU threat says. Three states which have enacted similar ordinances have been legally challenged for violating "constitutionally protected speech rights," the group points out. Besides, the ACLU assures, "The English language is not under attack in Jackson or anywhere else in the state or country." Municipalities nationwide have been sued in recent years for enacting legislation seen as hostile towards illegal immigrants. Cities and towns have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend their measures in court and some have rescinded them because they can't afford ongoing legal battles to defend them.
