Maxine Waters Under Investigation Posted: 17 Sep 2009 01:22 PM PDT A senior member of the congressional committee handling the financial crisis is being investigated for steering federal bailout funds to a questionable bank because she and her board member husband had deep financial ties to it. Months after the media exposed the shady deal involving prominent California Democrat Maxine Waters, the House Ethics Committee is finally investigating the veteran lawmaker's controversial intervention on behalf of her husband's failing Massachusetts bank. As a result, the financial institution (OneUnited) received $12 million in federal bailout funds. Waters pressured Treasury officials to bail out the minority-owned bank whose executives have donated heavily to her political campaigns. At the time she and her husband, Sidney Williams, held big financial stakes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in OneUnited and her husband had just been the bank's director and still served on its board. The conflict was so blatant that even the scandal-plagued chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, her good buddy Barney Frank, urged Waters to "stay out of it," assuring her that he would see to it that her precious bank got bailout money. Earlier this year Judicial Watch uncovered documents that Congress, especially Frank, for years ignored corruption at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac so it's not surprising that he took no action when Waters ignored his suggestion. The OneUnited case was hardly the first time that Waters, California's most influential black lawmaker, used her political clout to benefit her family financially. In 2004 Waters' hometown newspaper reported that her relatives made more than $1 million by doing business with companies, candidates and causes that the well-connected and powerful congresswoman had helped. Waters has also made international headlines for her frequent trips to communist Cuba to visit her convicted cop-assassin friend, Joanne Chesimard, who is also known by her Black Panther name of Assata Shakur. Chesimard was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted by a jury of the 1979 murder of a New Jersey State Trooper. With the help of fellow cult members, she escaped from jail and fled to Cuba. Outraged U.S. lawmakers insisted she be extradited but Waters always stood by her side, likening the cop-assassin to civil rights leader Martin Luther King. In fact, she wrote Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro a letter to ensure that she was not part of the group of U.S. legislators who voted for a resolution to extradite the cop murderer. Waters told Castro that she opposed extradition because Chesimard was "politically persecuted" in the U.S. and simply seeking political asylum in Havana, where she still lives.

Posted: 17 Sep 2009 12:25 PM PDT Now that he's settled into the White House, Barack Obama is shamelessly attempting to distance himself from the notoriously corrupt leftwing community group that helped him get elected. The scandal-plagued Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), well known for voter fraud, embezzlement and cooking the books, endorsed Obama and fought hard to get him elected. Not surprising considering the taxpayer-funded group has strong Democratic Party ties (Howard Dean and Bill Clinton praise its activism) and Obama proudly worked for it as a community organizer in Chicago. In 2008 Obama's presidential campaign paid ACORN more than $800,000 for services such as polling, advance work and staging major events. A Pittsburgh newspaper later reported that Obama covertly amended Federal Election Commission reports to say that the money went to so-called "get-out-the-vote" projects rather than the polling activities. The campaign responded to the article by claiming it had "mistakenly misrepresented" the services in federal reports. The close ties between Obama and ACORN are undeniable and well documented but lately the radical community group has become a publicity nightmare for the president and he conveniently wants the relationship to vanish, similar to the way he unsuccessfully tried to cut off his controversial, racially divisive longtime pastor and friend (Jeremiah Wright) during the presidential election. Recent ACORN highlights include a congressional investigation deeming it a criminal enterprise, countless voter registration fraud probes nationwide, the guilty plea of a high-ranking official for organizing a scheme that illegally paid workers (including "lazy crack heads") to register voters, housing fraud and videotapes of ACORN employees advising a prostitute and pimp on how to skirt housing and tax laws. The scandals led the U.S. Census Bureau to eliminate ACORN as a community partner for the 2010 count, the Democratic-led Senate to recently cut its funding and California's governor to call for an investigation of the group's widespread fraud in his state. No wonder Obama wants to pretend he doesn't have strong ties to ACORN. At this week's White House press briefing, Obama's trusted spokesman condemned the group's conduct as "unacceptable" and assured the "administration takes accountability extremely seriously." Oh, and he pointed out that previous administrations have given ACORN plenty of tax dollars. Speaking of, just a few months ago ACORN got multi billion-dollar infusion for "neighborhood stabilization activities" from Obama's economic recovery bill that was supposed to create jobs and stimulate the faltering economy.

Posted: 17 Sep 2009 12:15 PM PDT There's a name on every bullet, and there's someone responsible for every crime. The Teflon cloak Israel has wrapped around itself since Operation Cast Lead has been ripped off, once and for all, and now the difficult questions must be faced. It has become superfluous to ask whether war crimes were committed in Gaza, because authoritative and clear-cut answers have already been given. So the follow-up question has to be addressed: Who's to blame? If war crimes were committed in Gaza, it follows that there are war criminals at large among us. They must be held accountable and punished. This is the harsh conclusion to be drawn from the detailed United Nations report. ... |

It was a German officer who'd asked the U.S. air force to attack the tankers in the middle of the night, in a populated area. Some of those brought to hospitals were severely injured - with mutilated faces, burned hands and charred bodies. ... |

Posted: 17 Sep 2009 08:25 AM PDT Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has uncovered documents from the Treasury Department related to the March 2008 government-brokered acquisition of Wall Street firm Bear Stearns by JP Morgan Chase and Co. The documents include "confidential" term sheets describing the deal, released to the public for the first time, along with behind-the-scenes email correspondence between Treasury officials indicating that JP Morgan officials believed Bear Stearns to be "nearly worthless" just hours before the acquisition deal was announced. The documents were obtained by Judicial Watch in response to a December 8, 2008, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. On Sunday, March 16, 2008, JP Morgan announced that it had acquired troubled Wall Street firm Bear Stearns for a price of $2 per share, a fraction of the firm's $30 market price on Friday, March 14. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York (NY FRB) supported the deal with $30 billion in funding at the direction of then-Treasury Secretary Henry "Hank" Paulson. In addition to the "confidential" term sheets uncovered by Judicial Watch, the documents also include email correspondence indicating that the acquisition of Bear Stearns was very much in doubt just hours before the deal was announced to the press on Sunday night, March 16. According to an email sent Sunday morning by NY FRB official Michael Holscher to then-head of the NY FRB and current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, entitled "JPM Findings":
Ultimately JP Morgan received the guarantees it needed from the Treasury Department to consummate the deal to obtain the "worthless" Bear Stearns later that evening. These FOIA documents were initially withheld from Judicial Watch in March and were only released after an administrative appeal to the Treasury Department. Nonetheless, Treasury has redacted information from many of these new documents and withheld many documents in their entirety. Separately, Judicial Watch is pursuing a FOIA lawsuit for Vern McKinley, who is seeking documents on the government's contention that a Bear Sterns' collapse would have caused a "contagion" in the financial system. This lawsuit was highlighted in a September 13 editorial in The Wall Street Journal. "The public has a right to know the full truth about the federal government's unprecedented intervention into the financial markets, and that is what we are delivering through our open records requests. These Treasury documents, despite the improper redactions, provide a fascinating backdrop to the Bear Stearns deal, and what a scam it was. The federal government's $30 billion Bear Stearns bailout was designed to help stave off chaos in the financial markets. And this bailout did nothing to stave off the economic crisis. Since Bear Stearns, the federal government has committed trillions of taxpayer dollars to prop up other 'worthless' financial institutions with no end in sight," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
